Game # 10

How good are you at math?  Do you know that you will be using math every year for the rest of your life? A lot of times in school we think “I’ll never use this – so why am I studying it ?”

If you decided right now that math was going to become fun and easy for you – it would make the rest of your life a lot better, believe me. Just ask your parents or, better yet, your grandparents. Here’s the game:

If distance is measured in feet, then area is measured in square feet, and volume is measured in cubic feet.  Now, if your garden box measures 3-feet by 3-feet by 6-inches,

  • How wide is it ?
  • How long is it ?
  • What is its area ?
  • How deep is it ?
  • What is its volume ?

Using the formula for mixing your soil (See #4 of the Ten Basics on the “How to” page), how many cubic feet of each ingredient will you need ?

Now you can check with your parents to see how well they could do on these questions
