What do I need to teach SFG in ARGENTINAS' Schools? | Print |  E-mail
Teaching SFG in Argentinean Schools.

Q:
I am a high school teacher in Argentina. I want to be trained in square foot gardening to help many people in my country. My husband and I are helping them to start home bio-dynamic gardens, and we are interested in learning how to do the same when space is limited.

Teaching Tips

A:
Just invite me down and I’ll teach everyone how to become self-sufficient with a small Square Foot Garden at each household. In the meantime, start with the “What is SFG?” and “How to SFG” pages on our web site . For those countries that use the metric system, we start with a box one (1) meter by one (1) meter square. Use bamboo, cement blocks or any wood lumber for the sides. Then fill that box with 6 or 7 centimeters deep of homemade compost. Next, divide that box into thirds (about 30.5 centimeters each side), add a grid of bamboo or wood strips to show the division and you have 9 squares ready to plant. These squares are so close to a square foot each that you can use the regular 1, 4, 9 or 16 plant spacing. Follow the rest of the book and video for all the other advice on growing. By the way, we have the introductory video in a Spanish version now. Maybe your school could obtain a book and video for the community’s use. Good luck with your teaching - you are doing a good thing!
