Can you grow celery in a SFG ? PDF Print E-mail
GROWING CELERY

Q:
I've been reading your book and web site and spent part of last weekend preparing some 4x4 squares for next summer. The only sunny yard area is on a slope, so I've been doing a bit of terracing.

I've also been planning layouts. I saw lots of salad vegetables in your book, but I didn't see any information on spacing for celery. From the information at a seed web site, I would guess six inch spacing.

ADVANCED SFG

A: You're adventuresome, Adam. Celery is a difficult crop and not many people try it. I consider it a challenge for the advanced Square Foot Gardener. Six inch spacing is just fine, that's 4 plants per sq. ft.

TO BLANCH OR NOT TO BLANCH

To blanch, you might try the system I devised for double deep leeks. Check out the cover story of Organic Gardening Magazine, Feb. 1996, page 28, for all the details. You can order it from the catalog page, or you can search for it on the Internet. However, follow our latest improvements to Square Foot Gardening (see “What's New”) and use all Mel's Mix instead of the improved soil described in the magazine article. Rodale wouldn't let me mention Mel's Mix – I guess that made gardening too easy.

FOLLOW SAME DIRECTIONS FOR POTATOES

You can also follow the directions for potatoes in my recent column. Basically you just add Mel's mix to cover the main stem of the plant as it grows taller. Check it out; it's a lot of fun for the advanced Square Foot Gardener.

Good Luck,

Mel B.
