FATHER'S DAY Father's day, it's coming very soon, Sunday, June 21st. That's also the first day of summer. Now the question for you: What do most dads like to grow in their garden? Tomatoes of course. It's not only dad's favorite, it's America's favorite vegetable to grow. And, the bigger the better. Also, to be the first on the block is another real target, all across the country. It seems that the 4th of July is the target date, so it doesn't matter where you live. If you can pick your first ripe tomato by the 4th of July, you're a hero in the garden world or at least your household. Read more...

Mel's Last Trip to New Orleans
I want to tell you about my last speaking engagement trip because it turned out to be so eventful and exciting. It originally started as an invitation to speak before the Louisiana Master Gardeners in New Orleans on a Friday. Then, it was decided that, as long as I would be in New Orleans, the land grant college in Louisiana, LSU, might also like to have an event on the next day. So, that was arranged for Saturday. At the same time, Mike in Monroe Louisiana, has been working on a community-wide garden for many months now, and we have been back and forth helping each other set it up and get it built. This was primarily for a whole group of handicapped folks in a nearby village, but it expanded into the community, and then the First Presbyterian Church decided to help out, and Mike was able to get some land donated, and then a water connection from someone else, and it kept growing. Need a speaker for Next Year?
If you or your organization holds an annual event, and you are thinking about next year's speaker, please give serious thought about having Square Foot Gardening as your subject. Mel's calendar is filling up, but we also have other, certified speakers around the country that can come to your organization, and give both a talk as well as a workshop. Most experts have a feeling that the current economic downturn isn't going to be over in just one year, and it's going to become even more critical and important that people learn how to become self-sufficient, and healthier through these troubled times. What better way than by having a Square Foot Garden right outside their back door? So, write us, tell us your date, and what type of event you are having, and let's see if we can't get together and help each other out. Send your email request to:

Humanitarian work around the world!
As you can imagine, we get many requests for donations to do very worthwhile work around the world with Square Foot Gardening. Our advice and consultation are always free but because we are a small and self funded non-profit, when supplies, equipment or travel are involved, we have to put a limit on what we can do. In order to make sure that the donations we make go the furthest, help the most people, and fit in with our mission of bringing a better life to families through SFG, we have adopted a policy of not giving things away totally free, but giving large discounts for worthy projects. This, of course, makes sure that those doing the project are truly dedicated to it, and they are willing to put some of their own funds into the project. We have done this with books, and videos, as well as garden boxes, tomato towers, and even Mel's Mix, depending on the project description and again, the scope of work involved, permanency, availability to the most people, and the most worthy sounding projects.Read More...
