The Square Foot Gardening Foundation is dedicated to more than fantastic gardens. From fighting global hunger, to organizing and uniting local communities, and even helping those with disabilities enjoy the great pleasure of planting and harvesting their own gardens. All with little work, no heavy lifting, no heavy tools and perhaps greatest of all NO WEEDS! WORLD HUNGER Currently there are people all over the world teaching our methods to individuals who rely on their harvest for the survival of themselves as well as they're families. For example, there is a 6-acre demonstration garden in India operating today. The villagers who work in the gardens were trained in the Square Foot Gardening method, including locating, building, and planting the gardens as well as making compost. Now farmers who used to grow 2 crops a year in the 6 months of the non-monsoon rains are working year round. Now gardeners are working year round growing 22 different crops; all thanks to Mel and the Square Foot Gardening Foundation! ENHANCING LOCAL COMMUNITIES Locally the SFG Foundation is making an impact as well. Newly certified SFG Teachers are organizing classes at community centers such as Churches, Boy Scout troops, and even inside State Prisons. Because SFG is adaptable to all ages from very young children, right up to older generations, and especially adaptable for the handicapped and elderly it's easy to organize classes, and presentations for a variety of local organizations. Working on the state level, The SFG Foundation is beginning to teach gardening skills that help inmates make a positive transition into the civilian world. In addtion The SFG Foundation utilizes local contractors (people looking for work) to make the boxes, media, and packaging. Instead of going with a professional printer, The SFG Foundation chooses to employ disabled citizens to shrink wrap CD's, or any other task suitable for the handicapable. DISABLED CITIZENS A disability is not the end of all life! Thanks to Square Foot Gardening an individual can now harvest his or her abundant yield from a wheelchair! All other methods of gardening require a lot of space and must be located on the ground. Square Foot Gardening is the ONLY method that uses so little space (only 20% of a single row garden) it can be done in a box raised to sitting height. SFG requires NO heavy tools, NO heavy lifting, and NO complex machinery. It is the perfect garden for anyone young or old; especially for those with disabilities. Imagine the peace and tranquility so many people could experience from their very own SQUARE FOOT GARDEN! |
